A factory owner in Bhiwandi signed a solar contract in January and expected power by March. The panels went up on time. The system didn’t switch on until July, because nobody had checked whether the roof sheets could take the load or started the net metering paperwork. It’s a common story, and it’s why understanding how rooftop solar installations actually work saves months of frustration.
Here’s the process, step by step, as a properly run commercial project should follow it.
Every good rooftop solar installation starts on the roof, not in a sales meeting. An engineer checks the roof type, its age and condition, shading from tanks or neighbouring buildings, and the available area. For metal sheet roofs, they also look at purlin spacing and whether the sheets can take clamps without leaks.
This is the stage where a cheap installer saves money and you lose it later. Skip the structural assessment and you risk leaks, voided roof warranties or, in the worst case, structural damage.
Next comes your electricity data. Twelve months of bills show your consumption pattern, sanctioned load and tariff category. From this, the designer sizes the system to cover as much of your daytime load as the roof allows, without producing far more than you can use or export.
For commercial rooftop solar, the design also covers inverter placement, cable routing, earthing, lightning protection and access paths for cleaning. You should get a single-line diagram and a generation estimate before you commit.
Paperwork is where most delays happen. Depending on your state and system size, you’ll need an application to the distribution company, a feasibility approval and later an inspection before the bi-directional meter is fitted.
Net metering lets you export surplus daytime power to the grid and get credit against what you draw later. Rules on eligible capacity, billing method and timelines vary by state, so your installer should start this application early, ideally in parallel with design rather than after installation.
Once designs and approvals are in motion, panels, inverters and mounting structures are procured. Physical installation on a mid-sized commercial roof usually takes a few days to a few weeks, depending on size and access. Large industrial sites take longer.
Who does the work matters. A solar EPC company with its own installation team controls quality directly. When work is passed to a subcontractor, accountability gets blurred the moment something goes wrong. TechSolar uses an in-house EPC team on every project for exactly that reason.
Before switch-on, the system is tested for insulation, polarity, earthing and inverter performance. After the discom inspection and meter installation, the plant is commissioned. You should receive as-built drawings, warranty documents and access to the monitoring portal.
Ask for a short training session for your facility team. Knowing how to read the inverter display and spot a fault early is worth more than people expect.
People usually ask about installation days, but that’s the shortest part. From the first survey to a commissioned system, a commercial rooftop solar installation typically runs across several weeks to a few months. Design and procurement take time, and discom approvals and meter fitting set the pace more than anything on the roof.
The projects that finish fastest share one habit. The installer files the net metering application early and follows up weekly, instead of waiting for the panels to go up first. If a bidder can’t tell you who at their company owns that process, expect delays.
Seasons matter too. Planning a rooftop solar installation so the physical work lands before the monsoon avoids rain stoppages and gets you generating through the high-output months of October to May.
Is your installer doing the structural check, or assuming the roof is fine? That single question filters out a surprising number of bidders. Beyond that, look for:
Honestly, the lowest quote is rarely the cheapest system over 25 years.
